Game Bug Color · Astra Game Jam

Help Wandering Walt 3000 on its mission across the universe!

Game Bug Color is a minimalistic brough-like programming game. It was made in the span of two weeks during the ‘Thinky Games are for Everyone’ game jam hosted by Astra. The theme of the jam was to make a puzzle game accessible to all audiences, while keeping a ‘thinky’ dynamic.

In our game, the cosmos is overrunned with bugs. You must watch these thinky creatures carefully, learn their behaviour and try to catch them all directing Wondering Walt 3000’s skills. You will do so by placing instructions like ‘move’ or ‘catch’ in the terminal. When you are ready, press ‘Go!’ and watch your plan come to life.

What did I do?

  • I designed a user interface for the game that was visually appealing and easy to use. The programming console was the core element of the game, which meant that the interactive aspect is key to invite players to dive in and explore how the elements of the game work. I also created a design system that could generate new planets with totally different color palettes and a set of 8-bit icons and buttons.

  • I created a whole set of animations for the main character. These animations include every action he is able to do in several directions: receiving orders, moving, crossing and creating walls, teleporting and of course, catching bugs. I also created animations for the transitions between levels and chapters to extend the dynamic feel of the character to all aspects of the game.

  • I created concept art for the main elements of the game such as the console, main character, enemies, and backgrounds. My work included designing the overall look and feel of the game, including a vibrant colour palette, 8-bit inspired assets, and a minimalist aesthetic. I also designed the main character, Wondering Walt 3000, to help bring the game to life, as well as the alien bugs that stand in Walt's way. Additionally, I designed detailed backgrounds for the different levels and planets depicting a wide range of colourful and imaginative environments.
